Yes, you are missing something :-) See http://thalassa.croco.net/2308021.html (the last item of the list). You can download the crocodiles example as a separate archive on the download page. The archive's root directory is named examples/crocodiles, so if you unpack it right in your Thalassa directory, the crocodiles directory will appear right where that README expects it.
BTW, that README in fact contains the following:
crocodiles/ another static site example; may be omitted from the thalassa
source tarball, in which case you can get it as a separate
archive from the Thalassa CMS official site

Examples missing crocodiles
Maybe I'm missing something, but I downloaded source code of this release and built the thalassa with `make all`.
Following README and then examples/README it says (some not needed text omitted here in comment):
But I don't see crocodiles directory. My `ls` output looks following:
